OPTIMIZATION OF PORTFOLIO PROJECTS IN RAILWAYS COMPANIES

Abstract

Thematic title „Optimization of portfolio projects in railway companies” is created in accordance with holistic understanding of a railway company as an open system. Redesign of organizational structures of modern railway companies is governed by the changes in its environment. These changes feature: the usage of informational and communicational technologies in business, new knowledges and intellectual capital, growing main strategic resources of development, and transitional EU directives, also. In these conditions, the optimal solution is to manage the changes in a company through multiprojects with decomposition of strategic resources into operational goals through project portfolio management. This study will present an overview of the achievments in modern company theory and project portfolio management. Theoretical considerations of project portfolio management (PPM) are presented via comparative analysis with project management (PM) practice and with stress on the relations between managing a single project and a portfolio project. It is shown that PPM hasn’t occurred as a negation of PM, but has developed on solutions of its deficiencies and PM’s fine qualities. Portfolio concept is presented as a business map of different projects, which are selected according to their usefulness for substantiation of mission organization and strategic goals of the company and efficiency in combining available strategic resources. Portfolio management enables, through usage of informational technologies in business, for present analysis to be processed integrally, to reduce the multitude of acquired information to the most important data and to visualize the results, using the corresponding software packages.
