Abstract

Level crossings are points of increased safety risk, both from the aspect of rail traffic, and from the aspect of road traffic. Accidents at level crossings, as a rule, are with fatal consequences and great damage. All significant accident statistics indicate that, in almost 95 % of all accidents at level crossings, the responsibility falls on road traffic participants (drivers of motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians) who did not comply with traffic regulations. For this reason, level crossings must be properly secured. In this paper, the current state of safety at level crossings on the railways of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Croatia will be presented, and a comparative analysis will be made in order to propose possible measures to improve safety at level crossings.
