Abstract

The paper focuses on the analysis of the possibility of applying QGIS software for processing data on road-railway crossings on the example of railways in Serbia, which represent key points of interaction between road and rail traffic with a significant risk of accidents. Databases on extraordinary events are maintained through Excel tables of road crossings on railways in Serbia and tables of recorded accidents and incidents. The QGIS system is presented through introductory considerations and history, and then the latest version is presented with the possibilities of application in general and in railway traffic in particular. Data processing using the QGIS system is shown through the ways of creating a new project in QGIS and the graphical user interface of QGIS. The processes of creating a layer and inserting a map, creating a layer and inserting tracks and road-railway crossings, entering geographic points via coordinates and via code are given. A significant place is occupied by data visualization and analysis, as well as the ability to display data via HTML map tips in QGIS. The implementation of the QGIS software in the work included the display of road-railway crossings and the analysis of the highest concentrations of them in the entire territory of Serbia. By using the database on road-railway crossings and accidents over a period of five years, the zone with the largest number of crossings, the safety aspects of the busiest railways, and a spatial analysis of the entire railway network were identified.
