Bottlenecks in railway stations primarily refer to delays in train dispatch and arrival, extended waiting times, congestion, and reduced operational efficiency and reliability. Various factors can hinder the timely dispatch of trains, including the prioritization of passenger traffic, infrastructure issues, untimely communication, locomotive unpreparedness, and other organizational challenges faced by carriers. This paper explores modern techniques and technologies for optimizing information exchange related to trains, freight, and documentation processing, including customs and other formalities. The goal is to mitigate bottlenecks in passenger and freight transport, with a particular focus on border stations. Special attention is given to the Subotica railway station, analyzing the potential impact of its reconstruction and modernization on improving cross-border rail traffic. As the primary bottleneck between Serbia and Hungary, Subotica station experiences significant delays due to its role as the entry point into the Schengen Area, resulting in extended border crossing times.
