Abstract

In the frame of general policy of energy consumption we consider share of transport sector, particularly railways. It is presented a comparative analysis of energy efficiency (EE) in versatile transport modes and means, among which a particular attention is devoted to high speed railways (HSR). Methods of improving EE in main subsystems of HSR are systematically clustered, where the rolling stock is widely considered, in its interaction with power supply subsystem, and the track geometry in regard to its influence on EE. Particular attention is given to aerodynamics of high speed trains (HST), as a very influential factor of EE in HST. All these dimensions of EE are considered through their synergic interrelations, described by many actual analyses and illustrating data. Important factors of environmental aspect of EE, regarded through CO2 emissions, noise and incorporation of HSR in environment, are considered in detail as well.
