ANALYSIS OF EUROPEAN TRANSPORTATION OF GOODS MARKET AND EFFICIENCY OF RAILWAY OPERATORS
Abstract
The share of rail transport, as one of the traditional forms of land transport, began to record a decline in the sixties of the twentieth century. This trend continued until the beginning of the 21st century, when the results of more or less successful measures, undertaken in order to increase the share of railways in the open transport market, began to appear. Railways operators as unavoidable actors of rail transportation functioning, in conditions of open market do their business in competitive surrounding. Consequently operators have to continuously adjust to dynamic market conditions, in order to achieve survival on it.Position of operators on transportation market to a great extent depends of their performances. Measure of quality of performances is done in accordance with performance indicators of railway operators. Performance indicators represent measurable values of individual performances which as a whole reflect operator’s quality of work. One of the most important operator performance indicators is efficiency. In this paper it is performed analysis of transportation of goods market in EU area, with review of railways position on this market. It is performed analysis of efficiency of selected railway operators in transportation of goods from EU countries by DEA analysis method. Obtained results can be used as directions for improvement of efficiency of railway operators.
